My Tours: Pac West Tour 2007 - Journal Day 3

Sunday 08/12/07 - Rest Day at Cape Lookout State Park

The morning started early, about 3:30 am. That is when I awoke to the sound of rain on the tent. Thank goodness I had put up the tent fly and synched it down for rain. But I didn't think it would rain. As I lay there I realized I left some items out on the table. So I had to get up and out of bed to grab them off the table. It wasn't raining too hard but it was raining. After getting things back under the tent it was back to sleep for me.

It was about 8 or 9 am when I woke up. I decided that I was hungry and made some breakfast. Nothing exciting just oatmeal and fruit. I spent the next couple of hours laying there in the tent listening to the rain and reading my Clive Cussler novel. I guess I'll be spending my rest day doing a lot of resting.

Around noon by body was telling me it was time for lunch. I made a large helping of ramen noodles and added a can of shrimp to give it some flair. It was still raining on and off but I didn't feel like laying there any longer so I decided to get up and wander over to the restrooms/shower building. It had a large overhang and benches to sit on. Sitting there I talked with Otis, a cyclist heading North. He had started in Los Angeles and was heading to Seattle, Washington. He wanted to see the coast and cycling was the cheaper way to do it. He had been doing the hammock version of tent camping. He found out last night that the hammock isn't that water proof. We sat there and talked for a bit sharing stories of being on the road.

The rain had finally stopped around 4 pm. This made eating dinner a little more enjoyable sitting at the table rather than huddled in the tent. During the next hour a number of cyclists pulled in. I wasn't quite sure if sitting around all day in the rain was better than riding in it. Once the sun went down there were 11 cyclists in the hiker biker camp site. A mother and daughter team came in on a tandem pulling a burley two wheeled trailer. On the back of the tandem was their small dog. There was also a team of 3 guys that came in that I would see over the next week or so.

Evening was coming fast and it was time to get things setup for the morning. I took a few pictures of the setting sun and then headed back to camp. I set out breakfast, cooking gear, and packed up everything else. This would allow for a quick departure in the morning.
I was a little disappointed that my first rest day wasn't that exciting but I'm not sure what I expected. I was able to do the main thing that I needed to, rest from the miles from the previous two days. I was in bed early and asleep soon enough.

Pictures for the Day

The rain has finally stopped for the day. Looking back at the trees as the sun sets. One last look... At the setting of the sun.
