My Tours: Pac West Tour 2008 - Journal Day 3

Sunday 07/13/08 - Sunset State Beach - Rest Day

I thought I would be able to really sleep in this morning. But unfortunately the tractor started up  bright and early at 7:00 am. I couldn't believe it. I tried to sleep a little bit more but it just didn't work. So I got up and had some breakfast. Steve and I both looked at each other like doesn't the farmer ever sleep?  I guess not.

I decided to try out something new for breakfast with powdered eggs. It was a nice experiment but I'll stick to the oatmeal for now.

No clouds this morning as the sun was out right away so we decided to do our laundry now and let it dry all morning. This worked out well with just a slight breeze to help dry it out. I read for a couple of hours and really didn't do much. The tractor finally decided to call it quits for lunch and didn't come back for the rest of the day. This allowed me to get in a nap after lunch.  Life is good.

There were no other touring cyclists in camp today. I was surprised not to see any others. But I know that many times cyclists will stop at New Brighton which is just on the North side of Santa Cruz. Around noon about half the camp was emptied out, it was a little on the weird side, but very quiet. It would last until about 4 pm when the next wave of campers would file in and start taking up all the empty campsites.

Dinner tonight was the foil pack chicken.  I had used the burrito wraps in the morning with the eggs to try and do a breakfast burrito thing, Steve suggested I use it for chicken fajitas.  Nice idea, if only I had some sour cream.  Just after dinner we went down to the beach to watch the waves, the birds, and the campers. It was nice to sit on the beach and enjoy the views and breath in the salt air.

Not much left to do for the day so we headed to bed early knowing we would have a big day tomorrow.

Pictures for the Day

Early morning in camp. A look at the hiker/biker site. It's almost nap time. Devin has his laundry out to dry... ...and so does Steve.
The rest of camp is starting to pack up for home. Sunset Beach is part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the largest in the Nation. Looking out to Sunset Beach from the... ...road that comes in from camp. Looking South towards Monterey, not that you can see it, it's 40 miles South from here.
Dinner at last!  Chicken and potatoes.

A view of Sunset Beach: There is a road that leads from Camp to Sunset Beach.  At the top of the Road is a Vista Point.  Here is a 180 degree view from the Vista Point.  It was a great rest day.
